Other People's Podcasts: Q&A with Anna of Adobo Down Under.
"culture and food from the perspective of a Filipino Australian".
Adobo Yarn Podcast.
Q - Hello, Anna. Can you please tell us about yourself and your podcast?
A - I am Filipino-Australian based in Sydney, cooking, eating and sharing my passion for the Philippines' cuisine through my writing in Substack and other social media channels.
The Adobo Yarn podcast is an ode to my/our (I have a co-host) experience as migrants. It is about navigating the migrant life as Filipinos in Australia, discussing culture, food, experiences and adventures. "Adobo" represents the rich and layered nature of the human experience. "Yarn" symbolises the sharing of stories and experiences.
We are weaving a narrative together, connecting with each other through the threads of our personal histories and perspectives.
Q - What inspired you to start your Podcast?
A - As a migrant, as a parent and a woman (of a certain age), we (myself and my co host) both know that we have some wisdom learned, food and recipes to share and lots of stories to tell. The podcast was inspired by everyday conversations which resonates with every parent, every woman and every migrant.
Q - How did you choose your podcast’s niche or theme
A - The theme is about culture and food from the perspective of a Filipino Australian. It is about life experiences. We chose this niche because we have the lived experience to share.
Q - How do you plan and structure your episodes?
A - We only started January this year, and so the first few episodes sort of became sequential. First episode was the many firsts we encountered during our first year in Australia, second was chores, etc.
We release episodes every two weeks, but there's really no structure. We have a topic to discuss and the conversations flow from there.
Q - How do you choose your guests, if you have any?
A - We intend to invite guests in future episodes to get their perspective on certain topics, e.g. older generations who might have a different experience raising their families or the younger generation who were born and raised in Australia but now want to connect to their roots.
Q - What distinguishes your podcast from others?
A - There are many podcasts out there, and I think Adobo Yarn is special because it's very personal. It is a podcast that shares our lived stories and hopefully, it opens up conversations and understanding amongst the different generations and the wider audience.
We all have something to learn from each other - whether it's in cooking, in parenting, navigating menopause or learning about a new culture/cuisine. I think that's what makes this podcast special, because it's real and the conversations are unfiltered.
Q - What has been your memorable or impactful episode so far?
A - The first episode, because we shared our incredible and hilarious firsts when we came to Australia. The recording and audio was crappy, we had no clue what we're doing but we just kept on talking. I learned to edit audio, which makes it even more memorable.
Q - Are there any dream guests or topics you would love to feature?
A - We want to bring in our husbands and kids (now young adults) as guests, eventually. Because we are sharing our experiences as mothers/as women, we want to hear their version of the stories we tell LOL.
We also will do "live" cooking challenges in the next few episodes as soon as we get ourselves organised.
There's only so much gadget I can learn at a time.
The podcast is mostly in English, but we also sometimes talk in Tagalog (Filipino language).
